You’ve Changed Your Tune: John Dawson

"Melody is the part of music that most people say they comprehend and like. Many listeners identify ‘melody’ as the primary source of their enjoyment in music. But what’s in a tune? How does the style of music affect what goes on melodically? How are the melodies in Mozart Symphonies, Wagner operas, folk song and popular songs related? In this course we will see how melody is used and manipulated by composers as diverse as Monteverdi and Monty Norman, ask ask questions: What do they have in common? Does their approach differ significantly? How do composers keep melodic interest alive in their music? This promises to be the most tuneful course ever!"

"John Dawson has been a senior lecturer at Middlesex University; worked extensively in the professional theatre, playing for master classes and rehearsals for artistes such as Sir Anthony Dowell, and directed musical theatre from Mediaeval Mystery Plays in Canterbury Cathedral to pantomime at Buxton Opera House. He wrote the incidental music for Bedford Theatre Company's A Midsummer Night's Dream and Macbeth. One of his three published stage works, The Inside Story, has received performances in Europe, New Zealand and the USA. "
