Patrick Leigh Fermor: Travel Writer : Dr Stephen Rogers

"Patrick Leigh Fermor (1915-2011) has been acknowledged by such luminaries as Jan Morris as the pre-eminent travel writer of our time. In this course, we attempt to understand his work and the times that shaped them. We shall look closely at A Time of Gifts (1977) and Between the Woods and the Water (1986), the first two volumes recounting his epic journey across Europe in 1933, from Rotterdam to Istanbul (the third volume taking him into Turkey was not published in his lifetime). Robert McFarlane has described him as ‘a moral force, invigorating and inspiring those around him’."
