Materials: Dennis Waugh

"The 10 week course is broken down in to four sections: Section 1: Basic Materials Properties - Mechanical, thermal, optical and electrical properties are described using real materials and the precise vocabulary of materials testing is introduced and explained. Section 2: Typical Materials - Four main groups of materials are identified: ceramics, metals, polymers and composites. Typical members of each group are investigated in an attempt to relate their properties to microscopic structure. Section 3: Applications of materials – case studies - The choice of materials and associated fabrication techniques in some key applications are examined in order to illustrate how materials are selected for specific situations: Transport, buildings, medicine, clothing. Section 4: New materials - The final section will look at the future of materials. Wherever possible the sessions will include practical demonstrations and experiments."
