King Lear: Dr Gary Day

"King Lear is arguably not only Shakespeare’s greatest tragedy but also, possibly, the greatest tragedy ever written. This five week course will take different approaches to the play. We will examine the original story of Lear and his daughters-it was based on a legal case in Leicester, the city to which ‘Leir’ gave his name; we will see what was happening in the year that it was first performed, 1606, hear what various actors have said about the difficulties of playing the part, discuss it various meanings and explore whether Cordelia really is as virtuous as she appears."

Tutor: Dr Gary Day

"Dr Gary Day was a principal lecturer in English at De Montfort University. He teaches courses on a wide range of subjects including poetry, philosophy, the history of drama, and cultural history. He has edited a number of books on topics ranging from popular culture to D.H. Lawrence. "
